Casemiro guides leaders Real through Athletic test

Casemiro guides leaders Real through Athletic test

Aritz Aduriz cancelled out Karim Benzema's opener before Casemiro netted the victor with just over 20 minutes to play to seal a 2-1 victory.

The goal capped a hugely impressive all-round performance from the 25-year-old and his compatriot believes he has come on leaps and bounds in recent seasons.

"Casemiro has grown in a spectacular way. It is a hard place to go to but we will try to play well and win the game, doing as we've been doing up until now".

Casemiro and Raul Garcia had to be separated in an altercation that involved nearly all of the outfield players at San Mames, and the referee was busy in the latter stages of the first period due to the ill-tempered nature of the contest.

Marcelo criticised the team for failing to carry out Zidane's instructions in the wake of their 3-3 draw with Las Palmas, but he commended his team-mates for their efforts in a tough encounter on Saturday.

Real keeper Navas was eventually called into action just after the hour when got down to smartly palm away Inaki Williams' low shot from close range.

Ramos was next to come close for Real Madrid as he attempted to continue his excellent scoring run, but the Los Blancos skipper could only head a deep Toni Kroos free kick wide of the post as the score remained goalless. We know it will be one of the most demanding games that we have left. We know each other well and anything can happen on the pitch. Our objective is to keep getting points when we can. "We will just keep working and it was important to stay top of the table before the worldwide break".

Aduriz, who equalised for Athletic just three minutes before Casemiro's victor, felt his side were punished for not adding a ruthless touch to a good performance.

"I learned here how great it is to win everything, " Zidane added referencing his playing career. "It doesn't matter if you score if it doesn't help the team to win", said the striker. "We do not think about what lead we have". Zidane would have liked to avoid the Bundesliga giants but said that his side will be ready for the challenge as they want to revalidate the title. Although they have a habit of conceding an early goal to their rivals and if their displays have not always been convincing, there is no doubting the faith of a side that will count on the support of a packed stadium where Real Madrid are probably the most unpopular of visitors.
