Christian pastor uncovers big diamond

A pastor in Sierra Leone has found one of the world's largest uncut diamonds and passed it to the country's president.

No diamond that big has been unearthed in the country since 1970 after the 969-carat Star of Sierra Leone was dug up.

"A 706-carat diamond was presented to President Dr Ernest Bai Koroma yesterday evening", the statement said.

The president thanked the chief of the Tankoro area where the stone was found for not smuggling it out of the country.

Without a professional assessment of the diamond's potential flaws and colouring it is impossible to value the stone.

He has turned the diamond over to the government in hopes that it will be used to fuel development.

The diamond discovered in Botswana was named Lesedi La Rona, meaning "Our Light" in the local Tswana language. Even with a blemish, the diamond could easily be worth millions. It weighed in at 709 karats, making it the second-heaviest and largest diamond ever found in the country.

As for other notable diamond discoveries, the Cullinan Diamond is the largest ever found, clocking in at a whopping 3106-carats - about 621g. A polished stone cut from the diamond will go on sale in Hong Kong in May and is expected to fetch up to $3.6 million for a single 25-carat portion, according to Zimnisky.

A gem analyst from the United States stated that an artisan miner finding such a large diamond working with his bare hands and a few basic tools is highly unusual. That civil war left an estimated 120,000 dead.

Sierra Leone's gross national income per capita stood at US$620 (S$870) in 2015, according to World Bank data.

The world's most expensive diamond, found in Bostwana, was 813 carats and sold for $63 million previous year.
