House committee hears Senate's sanctuary cities bill

House committee hears Senate's sanctuary cities bill

Bob Behning's bill, making it identical to Senate Bill 276, which passed the Senate earlier this month.

The bill would assess a $99 fine on first-time offenders and a $200 fine on repeat offenses.

A bill that will give Kentuckians the option of a "voluntary travel ID" instead of a driver's license was passed by the Senate on a 26-11 vote Wednesday and sent to Gov. Matt Bevin.

Critics of the measure say the bill not only infringes on personal liberties but that it would be hard for police to enforce and could lead to unwarranted traffics stops.

When the bill was heard in committee last week, Craddick brought in witnesses who highlighted the dangers of texting at the wheel, including emotional testimony from a Denton man whose wife and daughter were killed in a head-on collision when someone veered into oncoming traffic while writing a text. "That's what this bill is trying to do, scare you". He says they are not the same.

One bill bans a procedure known as dilation and evacuation, which abortion-rights supporters contend is the safest and most common procedure used in second-trimester abortions.

"By approving SB6, the Texas Senate has shown a complete disregard for the health of the state economy and the well-being of the people they represent". Of the 13 states that are considering such measures, Texas may prove to be a bellwether. Some spoke only Spanish and urged lawmakers through translators to reconsider. But Republican House Speaker Joe Straus has publicly and repeatedly denounced the proposal as bad for business.

Local governments are also no longer threatened with losing all state grant funding.

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick was quick to issue a statement saying the bill is supported by the majority of Texans. That vote could happen on Wednesday.

Lois Kolkhorst (R-Brenham), would require people to use public bathrooms that correspond with the sex on their birth certificate, not their gender identity.

Yum Center: The House and Senate could not reach a final agreement on a bill that would be state government's contribution to aid the financially struggling KFC Yum Center.

These combative non sequiturs demonstrate the tough fight ahead to stop the bill in its tracks, and this high-profile, distinctive Equality Texas letter is part of that fight.

More than a dozen amendments by Democrats were rejected, including one that would have added discrimination protections for transgender individuals to the bill and another that would have prohibited individuals from personally investigating the gender identity of someone using a public bathroom.

The House is back at 10 a.m. Rick Perry. In 2013 and 2015, his bills died in the Senate.

"Kids are afraid to walk to school".

"I do not have an easy answer for you", Kolkhorst replied.
