Koeman talks tough on Lukaku and Barkley contracts

Koeman talks tough on Lukaku and Barkley contracts

The Premier League's joint-leading scorer on 19 goals with Harry Kane, of Tottenham Hotspur, has made no secret of his desire to play in the Champions League and further his blossoming career.

The player has to understand that if he doesn't sign a new contract, he needs to make a decision for the club so that they know what happens next year.

Maybe Ronald Koeman knew something we didn't when he pointedly said in his pre-West Brom news conference, "it's still not signed".

"Every player has ambition, likes to play for titles, play in the Champions League". No disrespect, but you know what I mean? I want my team to be the best. The big aim in football is to win as many titles as you can, so we need to try more, give a bit more.

Speaking at an Everton in the Community event on Tuesday, the Belgium striker was asked if he could become the best forward in world football. But the future has to be written.

The Daily Express claims Everton have been scouting the Frenchman all season long and are ready to step up their interest in the player as they prepare to bank significant funds from Lukaku's sale.

Reports linking Manchester United with want-away Everton striker Romelu Lukaku have intensified after Red Devils executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was pictured meeting with the player's agent, Mino Raiola.

Sky Sports News HQ's Merseyside reporter Vinny O'Connor takes a closer look at Romelu Lukaku's contract situation at Everton...

"He said, 'Rom, one summer I just came in and boom, boom, boom, boom". And they are playing in this league. But at the end of the day fans want to see trophies, players want trophies so we need to try more, give a bit more.

"Of course I am not happy about that interview because if Everton is not a club with a lot of ambition then I'm not the manager", the Dutchman said.

"Secondly, and I spoke with Rom this morning, I know it's hard but if you are a player, prepare yourself to play well and score goals - the rest needs to be done by the manager and the club".
