Slain EMT Was a Mother of Five Who Loved Her Job

Slain EMT Was a Mother of Five Who Loved Her Job

Arroyo and her partner pulled the vehicle over and both got out to help, according to a press release from the New York City Police Department.

Every dollar donated will go directly to her kids through the FDNY Foundation, especially the youngest child and her 16-year-old son, who lost their loving matriarch and sole financial provider, Gertler said. Video posted to Twitter by a bystander shows the ambulance speeding across an intersection with one of its doors open, its lights flashing and the body of Arroyo being dragged underneath the vehicle.

After being transported to Jacobi Medical Center, Arroyo was pronounced dead.

Police say 44-year-old Yadira Arroyo and another EMT were in the process of responding to a call Thursday night in the Bronx when they were alerted that a man was riding on the back of their ambulance.

Arroyo and Williams tried to stop him, but Gonzalez then, authorities say, reversed the ambulance, running over Arroyo and dragging her as he tried to flee. "And yet that danger always exists for them", he said. "They do crucial work - they save lives - but they should not ever have to be subjected to violence".

A passing police officer apprehended the suspect, aged 25, with the help of a bystander. The family is "going through unspeakable grief", the mayor said. "Tonight's tragedy in the Bronx is disgusting", he said.

Gonzalez was described as an emotionally disturbed person, with a criminal history, the NYPD told ABC7.

He struck Arroyo with the ambulance's rear tires and put it into drive, hitting a parked auto and a brick wall before getting stuck in a snow bank, officials said.

Arroyo's family said she was a devoted mother who loved her job and provided for her family, and they were devastated.

Gonzalez was charged with three counts of murder, grand larceny and operating a motor vehicle while impaired, the Post reports, and an arraignment is scheduled for Friday.

"They were acting very courageous", FDNY Chief Daniel Nigro said when praising the actions of both medics.

"We know our EMTs are courageous, they do crucial work, they save lives, but they should not ever have to be subjected to violence", de Blasio said.

FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro called it "a sad night for everybody in the department".
