Chuck Berry: An appreciation of 'The Father of Rock 'n' Roll'

Chuck Berry: An appreciation of 'The Father of Rock 'n' Roll'

Authorities have not yet released a cause of death.

Daughter Ingrid Berry-Clay and son Charles Berry Jr both performed alongside their father as members of his band.

In 1961, Berry got in trouble for transporting a 14-year-old girl across state lines and served 20 months in prison, a period in his life that friends said changed him forever.

He concluded: "Chuck, you were unbelievable, and your music is engraved inside us forever".

"Rest in Peace. "Johnny B Goode" in Heaven..."

Brian Wilson said, "He will be missed by everyone who loves Rock 'n Roll".

Learning a Chuck Berry song is a rite of passage for rock "n" rollers.

With its jazz rhythm and repetition the song is made more complex by the juxtaposition of the down beat lyrics with the uptempo tune.

Charles Edward Anderson Berry Sr. was idolized by many up and coming musicians and artists in his heyday such as the Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Songs like "You Can't Catch Me" may have found Berry motorvating away from the cops, but even when he escaped to his "Promised Land" he'd be accused of making "Too Much Monkey Business", even though he was "Almost Grown". Berry soon realized that he would have to play for multiracial audiences, as he was booked on segregated theaters.

"Remembering my mother explaining Chuck Berry after seeing "Back to the Future" when I was 7 & getting "Great 28" on tape nearly immediately", the writer Jesse Jarnow wrote.

To celebrate turning 90, the rocker announced last fall he would release his first album in 38 years - "Chuck" - sometime in 2017 on the Nashville-based lable Dualtone. Married to his wife, Themetta Suggs, since 1948 and with four children to support, Berry embraced the musical style that made his career.

- Arnold Schwarzenegger: "When I was 10 years old and I dreamed every night of moving to America, Chuck Berry played the soundtrack. Now I can hang up up my shoes!"

Berry didn't just create the music for so many rock n' roll lives but helped invent the characters - the bored student, the groupie, the would-be guitar hero - and placed them in an American landscape of restlessness, aspiration and motion.

In Clinton's final year in the Oval Office in 2000, the president honored Berry as one of the Kennedy Center honorees.
