North Korea carries out 'revolutionary' high-thrust rocket engine trial

KCNA quoted Kim as saying that the successful test was a "great event of historic significance" that marked the "new birth" of the country's rocket industry as the North seeks to erase its dependence on other countries' technology. The new report comes in the wake of an unusually overt threat to the US and Japan by the North earlier this month, after it fired off a simultaneous barrage of four missiles as part of exercises that Pyongyang said were training for strikes on USA military bases in the country.

An "important person" will be among several people detained by the police to facilitate investigations into last month's assassination of Kim Jong-nam, the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Liquid fuel rockets are much easier to spot with satellites because they require more outdoor preparation.

Outside observers say the nuclear-armed Pyongyang's space programme is a fig leaf for military use, as rocket engines are easily re-purposed for missiles.

North Korea announced the testing of a new rocket engine on March 19, which would be used in missiles such as these pictured in the March 7 edition of North Korea's official Rodong Sinmun newspaper.

While the missiles themselves weren't new, the tactic was, analysts said. It was developed without "dependence on the technology of other countries", KCNA said.

In contrast to the Sunday reports, which did not go into detail about the engine performance, the North noted then that the September test lasted 200 seconds and that a single engine's thrust reached a force of 80 tons, which means it could lift an object weighing 80 tons for 200 seconds.

Even with Tillerson now in Beijing and scheduled to meet with President Xi Jinping on Sunday, Trump on Friday tweeted: "North Korea is behaving very badly. We will follow the legal channel to get them". "China has done little to help!"

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has pushed back against the tougher USA line on North Korea, reiterating his country's view that the only way to rein in its reclusive neighbour is through talks.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Saturday that U.N. Security Council resolutions need to continue to be implemented, but an effort should also be made to "seek a breakthrough point to restart the dialogues and come back to the right track of a negotiated settlement". "We hope all parties, including our friends from the United States, could size up the situation in a coolheaded and comprehensive fashion and arrive at a wise decision".

During his visit to Seoul, Tillerson admitted that Washington's "strategic patience" policy toward Pyongyang was over. The engine appeared smaller than one tested in April past year, and the color of the flame would provide clues about the type of fuel used, said Hanham, the nonproliferation expert.

"There is a possibility that the North will provoke other countries by firing off an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) or launch a satellite soon", the scholar said.
