'Pro-PKK rally scandal': Turkey summons German envoy

'Pro-PKK rally scandal': Turkey summons German envoy

Some of the participants carried flags and banners of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), as well as portraits of Kurdish nationalist leader Abdullah Ocalan.

Turkish presidential spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin on Saturday strongly condemned German authorities for allowing PKK followers to march in its city of Frankfurt.

According to the Anadolu news agency, the ministry called Germany allowing use of PKK symbols during the marching a "thought-provoking case" and informed Germany's ambassador in Ankara about the discomfort on the issue.

More than 40,000 people have been killed since the PKK launched its insurgency against the Turkish state in 1984.

The PKK is listed as a "terrorist" organisation by the European Union and US.

The ban this month on Turkish officials campaigning in various European states has triggered a crisis in Ankara's relations with the EU.

Germany hasn't responded to the comments.

In the interview with CNN Turk, Kalin also accused Germany of supporting the US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Ankara believes was responsible for last year's attempted coup.

"Turkey has tried to convince us of that at every level but so far it has not succeeded", Kahl was quoted as saying by the "Spiegel" news magazine.

Police in Frankfurt, where hundreds of officers were deployed to the event, described the protest as peaceful and said on Twitter that most of the demonstrators had complied with German laws, adding: "We want to guarantee they can exercise their fundamental rights". It's a sign of their support for FETO. "Why are they protecting them?"

Turkey has been locked in a feud with both Germany and the Netherlands after both countries prevented its ministers from addressing rallies of expatriate Turks, citing safety concerns.

There is a possibility that Turkish ministers could plan another rally in Germany ahead of an April 16 referendum on changing the constitution, President Tayyip Erdogan's spokesman said on Sunday, a move that could further heighten tension with Berlin. The Turkish government says the changes would boost stability and make governance more efficient.
