Steve Agnew wants Middlesbrough job permanently but is he right man

He had a short stint in charge of the Jordan national team last year and was also made Derby's football advisor for Darren Wassall's spell as interim manager from February to May last year.

Agnew has been placed in charge of team affairs for the time being, ahead of Sunday's clash with Manchester United, and sources on Teesside have indicated he could yet be asked to perform a similar role to Craig Shakespeare at Leicester.

The 51-year-old took charge of Boro for the first time after Aitor Karanka's sacking as they lost 3-1 to Manchester United at the Riverside on Sunday.

Agnew is the front-runner to be given the job, according to the Gazette, after being backed by Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson. They never recovered from the episode last season that led to Karanka being absent from the touchline for Boro's 2-0 defeat at Charlton.

With Boro now 19th, without a league win since mid-December and having scored only three goals in their last 10 league games, Agnew faces quite a challenge and knows it. "Keeping us up would be the single biggest achievement of my life", he acknowledged.

"Of course. It's a club I have a big affection for", he was quoted by the BBC. "I couldn't be more proud of the players, the fighting spirit they showed, and the crowd was top-class".

The win for Manchester United moves them up to fifth in the Premier League heading into the worldwide break. I think I'm capable of delivering it and the players are capable. I sit here and I keep using the word "confident", and I do believe we will stay in the Premier League.

Speaking in The Times today Gibson suggested Agnew is a serious contender for the post. "There's more to him than people know and a bit more steel", he said.

"This club will always hold a special place for me and I wish everyone connected with Middlesbrough Football Club the very best for the future". Then we had a very busy summer. "I think he can be the glue to unify us completely".
