Turkish Referendum Threatens Formal Divorce With EU

Turkish Referendum Threatens Formal Divorce With EU

But Turkish ministers say they need to respond to popular demand for the return of capital punishment to deal with the ringleaders of the attempted coup in July.

Relations between Berlin and Ankara have soured recently over a German Parliament resolution labelling the 20th-century killing of Armenians as "genocide", Turkey's crackdown on the opposition and civil society following a failed coup last summer, and appearances in Germany by Turkish officials campaigning for constitutional change in an upcoming referendum.

Erdogan described Yucel, whose arrest has caused global concern, as a "terror agent" and "supposed journalist" and accused Germany of hosting him for one month at its Istanbul consulate before he went to police for questioning. Berlin reacted by saying it will not take part "in a game of provocation".

Ankara, meanwhile, has accused Germany of allowing the banned Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, to hold rallies in Germany.

"Despite challenging circumstances, the first year of the EU-Turkey Statement has confirmed a steady delivery of tangible results", announced the factsheet.

He added that Turkey has already begun taking retaliatory measures and that these would continue. In fact both scenarios are seen as a win-win scenario for the ruling AKP party in Turkey.

In Europe, there has been rising fear of the growing popularity of radical right populist politicians that are strongly opposed to Turkey's allegedly political Islamist leadership and closer ties between Turkey and the EU. "And German DW television broadcast the terror rally live". "We have done everything for that and the Turkish people are fed up of waiting", he said, preferring to stay anonymous.

Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Wednesday threatened to suspend a refugee deal with the European Union, sending shock waves across Europe.

"The deal's goal isn't all that complex: Erdoğan, whose country is home to just under three million refugees, has agreed to prevent a further wave of migration to Germany and is being paid a handsome sum of money for his services as doorman".

The Turkish leader urged the immigrants in European countries to have big families to "fight the injustices of the West".

On Wednesday, Turkey threatened to scrap a critical deal on halting the flow of migrants to the European Union amid a spiralling war of words between Ankara and the bloc.

Following the latest diplomatic crisis, mainstream German media have run articles about how Ankara has shackled Merkel's policies towards Turkey by playing the card of scrapping the refugee deal.
