Auburn trustees select new university president

University trustees are set to vote on a new president of Auburn University today. The search for the new leader at Auburn is now underway, according to Auburn's website.

Leath has served as Iowa State University's president since January 2012.

Leath had led a five-year growth spurt at ISU, which overtook the University of Iowa as the state's largest university, with 36,660 students (Auburn, another land grant school, is about 28,000). He becomes the university's 19th president. He has earned degrees in plant science and plant pathology from Pennsylvania State University, the University of DE and the University of IL. Board members met to consider whether to retain Leath after receiving an audit detailing his use of university planes.

However, Auburn's board seemed willing to trust Leath and lean on his administrative success in hopes that his trend toward positive university accomplishments will continue at Auburn.

Leath has published nearly 100 scientific articles in his career, mainly on plant disease, pathology and breeding, according to his official Iowa State biography.

Others agreed with the support for Leath. Teeter is a professor of forest economics and immediate past chair of the university senate. Our appreciation for the Cyclone family is beyond words, and we found this extended family of students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends to be the greatest joy of our time at Iowa State.

The Board of Trustees voted on the new president today after announcing its meeting only four days ago.

And while not all credited to Leath, Iowa State student enrollment has increased almost 44 percent in the past decade, a growth that has both challenged and driven faculty and administration to maintain quality with an ever-growing quantity.

Gogue has held Auburn's top position since July 2007.

"The contribution Jay and Susie Gogue made to Auburn is immeasurable", said McCrary.
