Canada mid-air plane collision over shopping centre kills one

Longueuil police tweeted Friday afternoon the other pilot's injuries were not life-threatening.

"I saw them hit and a wing came off one of the planes, which started to spiral, and the other plane crashed", Carol Pelchat told CBC News on Friday.

Each plane had one male pilot, police said.

Wreckage from one of the Cessnas fell into the carpark of the mall near Montreal.

Three people were injured in the accident.

Witnesses said the accident sounded like an quake at the moment of the planes' impact.

He was outside smoking a cigarette when he saw the plane crash. "Then we saw pieces of plane fall out of the sky everywhere".

Martinez said he ran to the plane and saw a man inside, whose body was crushed.

It was piloted by a 21-year-old Cargair student, who pointed his craft eastwards towards the Promenades Saint-Bruno shopping centre.

Jonathan Vanasse was eating at a restaurant next to the parking lot crash site.

The area was closed off after initial reports of a fuel leak. One of them died, the other was seriously injured.

The Transportation Safety Board has dispatched a team of investigators from Ottawa to St-Bruno.

The controller is referring to call sign GPNP, a Cessna 152 piloted by a 23-year-old trainee with Cargair, a flight school based at the small airport roughly 15 kilometres west of downtown Montreal.

Cargair, which describes itself as Canada's largest private pilot school, instructs about 150 pilots every year for airlines in China, where training facilities can't keep up with demand, Adams said.
