The singer also celebrated the milestone by releasing a new album, becoming the first person to do so at the age of 100.

Sheeran's record Divide, which became the fastest-selling album by a male artist in the United Kingdom, is set to stay at the top of the album chart, followed by Depeche Mode's Spirit at number two.

The record features re-orchestrations of some of her most famous songs including We'll Meet Again and (There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover.

It will also symbolise the release of her new album, Vera Lynn 100.

Older patients being cared for at Basildon University Hospital raised a teacup in honour of Dame Vera Lynn, who was known as the forces' sweetheart during the Second World War.

What is happening at the White Cliffs of Dover for Dame Vera Lynn's birthday?

Speaking from her home in Ditchling, East Sussex, she thanked the starstruck students and recalled her "very good memories" at the school.

"She was there unofficially to pay tribute to Dame Vera".

Born Vera Welch on March 20, 1917 in East Ham, east London, she has had a singing career spanning 93 years as she made her stage debut at the age of seven.

Her 2009 compilation We'll Meet Again, which shares its name with one of her biggest global hits, made her the oldest living artist to top the United Kingdom album charts.

Dame Vera Lynn said: "I can't believe everyone is going to so much trouble to wish me a happy birthday - I feel incredibly humbled by it all".

A 350 feet high projection has been beamed onto the White Cliffs of Dover to mark the 100th birthday of Dame Vera Lynn today.

Actress Lesley Joseph said: "Dame Vera you are a complete star and congratulations it's a wonderful, wonderful achievement". The event comes just two days after a celebration musical evening in the London Palladium, with all proceeds going to her children's charity.

The chart spot will mean Dame Vera, who has turned 100, will beat her own record as the oldest living artist to reach the top 20.
