Intel Looks to Gain From Data Explosion With New Drives

Higher capacity models as well as U.2 form factor variants will follow later this year.

Like many or even most new technologies, the new Optane SSD DC P4800X offerings don't quite reach the heights initially hoped for but at the same time they deliver significant benefits that should attract enterprise customers and help to achieve Intel's larger goal; to fundamentally transform storage and memory architectures. In short, with the new Optane SSD DC P4800X solutions Intel appears to have achieved its goal of creating a robust new technology that combines the attributes of both memory and storage.

Intel also promises higher endurance than your typical SSD. And the same goes for the data centre.

Intel announced Optane back in 2015 as the brand name for its implementation of 3D XPoint solid-state memory, developed in partnership with Micron, and pledged that it would hit the market the very next year as a high-performance replacement for traditional NAND flash and a non-volatile alternative to dynamic RAM (DRAM). By providing more - and more cost-effective - memory, the latest SSD can enable applications driven by artificial intelligence and machine learning, such as faster trading and better medical insights, Intel said.

Meanwhile, Micron is targeting its SSDs based on Xpoint technology at cloud applications, data analytics, online transaction processing and the Internet of Things.

Intel argues that current storage approaches based on DRAM and NAND are contributing to the current datacenter storage gap, and that storage platform increasingly need to behave "like system memory".

This particular SSD has a capacity of 375GB and will have an initial price of $1520 (~R19 280).

The P3700 was the fastest flash drive, in terms of reading and writing data before the arrival of the Optane series. These tests of the shipping product show that the first Intel Optane SSD DC P4800X "delivers 5-8x faster performance at low queue depth workloads, exhibiting extremely high throughput for single accesses and super low latency". Intel has stated earlier that these drives will be eight times faster than the ordinary SSDs that are available in the market.
