Penélope Cruz to play Donatella Versace in American Crime Story

The Versace installment is also slated to air in 2018.

After rumors that Lady Gaga would be playing the role, today it was revealed that Spanish actress Penélope Cruz is heading to TV as a series regular, playing Donatella Versace, on the next season of FX's "Versace: American Crime Story". Now, producers have apparently decided they want a little less pop-star bling, and a little more European sophistication.

Edgar Ramirez is set to play Gianni, while Darren Criss (Glee) will portray serial killer Andrew Cunanan. Though it definitely adds a touch of familiarity to see old faces worked into new characters in these Murphy projects-it'll be amusing to watch Glee's Darren Criss morph into Versace's killer Andrew Cunanan-it also gets sort of exhausted. In the meantime, we've always got Gina Gershon's gloriously overwrought version of the character in the 2013 Lifetime movie House Of Versace. In 2016, Cruz starred in Zoolander 2, The Brothers Grimsby and went on to produce and star in Ma Ma and appear in The Queen of Spain.

Based on the book Vulgar Favors by Maureen Orth, Versace: American Crime Story starts production next month.

This marks the USA television debut for Cruz, who won an Oscar in 2009 for Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Look for her later this year in the film adaptation of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express, alongside Kenneth Branagh, Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Josh Gad, and Judi Dench. Katrina will be the second installment in the series and will air in 2018. It ignited the careers of some of its actors, including Sterling K. Brown, and reinforced the positions of accomplished actors like Sarah Paulson and Cuba Gooding Jr.
