Russian Federation summoned Israeli ambassador over airstrikes in Syria

Russian Federation summoned Israeli ambassador over airstrikes in Syria

The summons, made on Friday, was confirmed by Russia's foreign ministry which said the Israeli ambassador to Moscow, Gary Koren, had been asked to explain an exchange of fire with Syrian government forces in which anti-aircraft missiles were fired at Israeli jets.

The two countries have closely co-ordinated their Syria policies with each other during this period, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin having met five times since the beginning of 2015.

Russian Federation would like the United States to play a more constructive role in Syrian conflict settlement efforts, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Monday, Sputnik reported.

Israel used Iron Dome extensively to intercept rockets fired by Palestinian militants in the 2014 Gaza war, and the Arrow missiles were developed with an Iranian missile threat in mind.

On Sunday, Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman threatened to destroy Syria's air defence systems "without the slightest hesitation" if it happened again.

The Israeli attack was reported by the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which said that the strike targeted a auto traveling on a road between Damascus and Quneitra, a town in the Golan Heights near the border with Israel.

The Israeli military denied that any planes had been hit.

"We are taking action to prevent the transfer of advanced weaponry to Hezbollah, and we will spare no effort to prevent that in the future".

Nasrallah, however, said that Israel has been using "all kinds of excuses" throughout the war to intervene, and that what they are really afraid of is an ISIS defeat, because that would mean a Hezbollah victory.

Outside of the recent rhetoric, however, what has been fast emerging in recent months is that Israel may have badly misjudged the potential outcome of the Syrian war.

Israel's military said it had been targeting weapons bound for Lebanon's Hezbollah movement, which backs the damascus regime in Syria.
