US Imposes Electronics, Liquids Ban on Airlines From 13 Nations

Passengers on flights originating in 13 nations will no longer be allowed to carry any electronic device larger than a cellphone in airline cabins, USA media reported on Monday.

In messages posted on both Twitter and Facebook and now deleted, the worldwide carrier said cellphones and electronic devices needed for medical reasons could be carried on-board, but everything else had to be stowed in checked baggage "following instructions from the concerned USA departments". Cellphones and medical devices are OK, but everything else has to go into your checked luggage - which mostly defeats the objective of all these devices to entertain you during a long worldwide flight.

Royal Jordanian said the electronics ban affected its flights to New York, Chicago, Detroit and Montreal.

Another US administration official says this covers devices larger than a cellphone.

The ban does not apply to mobile phones or medical devices, but does include laptops, tablets, electronic games and cameras, according to reports.

The restrictions would apply to flights coming from some North African and Middle Eastern countries, according to CNN. The tweet was deleted several hours later.

American Airlines, Qatar, Etihad, and Emirates did not immediately respond to inquiries about any restrictions to electronics in their cabins on certain or all flights.

The representative declined to answer further questions and said inquiries should be directed to the TSA.

The Transportation Security Administration distributed the new rule in an email on Monday, The Guardian reported.

In a written statement, the Department of Homeland Security said, "We have no comment on potential security precautions, but will provide any update as appropriate". This ban, like the earlier one, has been halted by a court. Many commented that the airline would lose customers over this policy.
