Authorities target distracted drivers in statewide campaign

We all know this isn't a rarity.

Distracted driving is any activity - such as grooming, eating or texting, the most common diversion -that takes a driver's attention off the road.

A recent study by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission shows more than two-thirds of distracted drivers are distracted by their cellphones. That may not sound like much, but when you consider that only once is enough to create great danger, it's plenty.

It is illegal to hold or operate electronic devices, including smart phones, while driving.

Similarly, when we are going through an intersection and see pedestrians approaching the intersection can we assume they will stop before stepping off the curb if they are holding and looking at phones? Ummm, teens? You're contradicting yourselves.

Governor Robert Bentley has declared April Distracted Driving Awareness Month in Alabama. "Distracted driving is unsafe and irresponsible".

Companies and individuals with company-owned and personal vehicles that are used for company business can learn strategies that manage driving behavior by joining CNA and Focus Driven, a nonprofit that raises awareness around distracted driving, at a complimentary webinar April 11 at 12 p.m. CT.

Nationally, 1 out of 10 drivers between the ages of 15 and 19 years old involved in fatal crashes was distracted (NHTSA). Thus driving, and in particular defensive driving, requires us to repeatedly engage in a complex series of cognitive tasks. Law Enforcement and Traffic Safety Advocates are teaming up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to make sure all motorists keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel.

Finally, some are hoping that self-driving cars may come to their rescue. U Text. U Pay. campaign, a high-visibility effort to enforce distracted-driving laws.

The study found that drivers between 19 and 24 were almost twice as likely as other drivers to acknowledge that they typed or sent a text message or email. Given this list, those of us who continue to drive ourselves may be distracted nonetheless - even if we've given up our phones while in the vehicle.
