Meningitis has killed over 215 in Zamfara, says SSG

Meningitis has killed over 215 in Zamfara, says SSG

Already, Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, in a statement yesterday said government has secured 500,000 doses of the meningococcal vaccines from the World Health Organisation (WHO), which will be used in Zamfara and Katsina states, while additional 800,000 units are being expected from the British government.

Shinkafi made the disclosure at a news briefing in Gusau on Tuesday.

"The team will also deploy and coordinate a robust national communication and social mobilisation campaign, focused on (meningitis) prevention and control in rural and urban areas of affected states", the centre said.

According to the government, antibiotics and management supplies available and being used as per protocol in all states for treatment, while the number of cases now on admission or treated since the onset of the outbreak are being collated across the country, while a micro plan had been concluded in Zamfara State, worst-hit by the scourge, and where it all started in November 2016, for possible vaccination in week 14.

The Lagos State Government on Monday alerted residents of the state on the dangers of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) and debunked any reported case of outbreak of the disease in Lagos.

"If this had been detected early, then we would have had rounds of vaccinations and would not be having this epidemic", he said.

Shinkafi said that the vaccination would be concentrated on high density areas including key public institutions and schools to curtail further spread.

Meanwhile, the Senate Committee on Primary Health is now meeting with the Health Ministry and other stakeholders to examine the cause of the outbreak and also fashion out a way to stop the current problem and prevent a recurrence.

The Nigeria Medical Association in Zamfara had last weekend accused the government of Mr. Yari of failing to prepare for the outbreak of the despite warnings, and not responding adequately to the epidemic.

Mr. Yari, however, said the outbreak might not be unconnected to the people's total disregard of God's commandments.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja, the Director Media and Public Relations in Federal Ministry of Health, Mrs. Boade Akinola, said the current outbreak started in Zamfara State in November 2016.

"People have turned away from God and he has promised that "if you do anyhow, you see anyhow" that is just the cause of this outbreak as far as I am concerned".

The emergency response, according to the centre, includes vaccination campaigns across the affected states, beginning on Wednesday.
