Democrats threaten delay on Supreme Court nominee

Democrats threaten delay on Supreme Court nominee

Some Democrats consider Gorsuch to be an invalid nominee, citing Republican opposition to President Obama's Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland, who never received a hearing previous year.

Five more Democrats said Friday that they will vote against Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch and will support a filibuster against him.

The Democratic opposition to Gorsuch could prompt a showdown in the Senate and delay the judge's confirmation but ultimately the Republicans are likely to win that fight and avoid another setback in Congress for Trump who suffered a blow on Friday when lawmakers pulled a major healthcare bill. In the last 47 years of Supreme Court nominations - spanning the appointments of the 16 most recent justices - only Alito was forced to clear the 60-vote procedural hurdle to break a filibuster.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., says he will vote no on the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to serve on the United States Supreme Court. "He was groomed by the Federalist Society and has shown not one inch of difference between his views and theirs". "My vote will be no, and I urge my colleagues to do the same".

"We were encouraged by Judge Gorsuch's responses and feel confident based on those responses and his record that he will be a powerful voice advancing a conservative jurisprudence on the Supreme Court", Wussow, general counsel and vice president for public policy of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), said in written comments for Baptist Press.

Throughout his distinguished career, Judge Gorsuch has developed a reputation for impartially rendering legal decisions that support the basic tenets of the Constitution. Throwing a fit over a nominee as qualified as Gorsuch could delegitimize Democrats' future opposition if Trump gets the opportunity to choose a second justice. Jameel Jaffer, former deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Union, said the Senate should not confirm Gorsuch without getting answers.

The American Bar Association's Nancy Scott Degan says the committee evaluating Supreme Court nominees doesn't give a well-qualified rating lightly.

Murray said one reason she's opposing Gorsuch is because of "chaos" in Trump's administration, pointing to his refugee and travel ban blocked by federal courts and an FBI investigation into the Trump campaign's connections with Russian Federation. They examined his qualifications based on integrity, professional competence and temperament.

Democrats Jeff Merkley of Oregon, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, Elizabeth Warren of MA and Ed Markey of MA have declared their opposition. And a Colorado man criticized Gorsuch for ruling against his autistic son in a case, saying Gorsuch's opinion eviscerated the minimal education requirements schools must provide disabled children.

Top Senate Democrat Charles Schumer is now officially on record as opposing President Donald Trump's choice for the Supreme Court. "He is someone who nearly instinctively favors the powerful over the weak, corporations over working Americans".

If enough Democrats join Schumer in attempting to block Gorsuch's nomination, at least one Republican seems ready to go nuclear. Sen. But he did tell Sen.

"Any Democratic senator who votes for cloture for Gorsuch hurts not only their own standing, but makes the entire party look weak - dampening enthusiasm among the very voters Democrats need to fire up in 2018".
