South braces for stormy day expected to bring tornado risk

The National Weather Service is calling for potent thunderstorms, high winds, hail and possible tornadoes on Wednesday. It was the second suspension of play on Wednesday and also cut short the popular Par 3 Contest.

The latest forecast model data, along with new information from the Storm Prediction Center continues to point to a significant severe weather event.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for a broad area, which means that conditions are favorable for severe weather.

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley said the state of emergency would last until the severe weather subsides.

A storm barreling toward the Southeastern United States will leave almost 55 million people at risk of tornadoes, damaging winds and thunderstorms Wednesday, according to a CNN forecast. This will put the first focus for more-numerous severe thunderstorms, including a few long-lasting tornadoes, in parts of southwest and interior south Georgia through late-morning.

Forecasters said a wide area including large parts of Alabama, Georgia and SC were under the threat of powerful, long-lived tornadoes.

The threat of severe weather in the Carolinas has led local school officials to announce early dismissals.

The National Weather Service said it had received reports of baseball-sized hail in the west Alabama town of Camden, but only small ice pellets fell at the McGraw-Webb Chevrolet Inc.

A squall line may develop overnight, possibly producing a final round of severe weather between midnight and 6 a.m., according to the Weather Service.

The National Weather Service predicts widespread, serious thunderstorms beginning early Wednesday across much of Alabama and Georgia and into the Florida Panhandle and southwestern SC.
