California governor declares end to drought emergency

California governor declares end to drought emergency

"This drought emergency is over, but the next drought could be around the corner", the governor said.

The executive order issued by Brown effectively terminates the state of emergency implemented in January of 2014.

The 2015 order led environmentalists to complain that the state, which leads the nation in production of fruits and vegetables, did too little to force farmers to conserve water.

After years of living under drought conditions, California residents could breathe a collective sigh of relief Friday morning when Governor Jerry Brown declared that the state's drought was officially over.

The state's announcement also offered a sobering reminder of the effects of a drought that caused "the driest four-year statewide precipitation on record", from 2012 to 2015.

With an Executive Order, Brown lifted the drought emergency he declared three years ago in all California counties except for Fresno, Kings, Tulare, and Tuolumne counties where emergency drinking water projects continue due to low groundwater supplies.

The USDA Drought Monitor data for California, for early April 20187, left, and 2016, is shown. The damage will continue to affect the state for years, the governor stated. The company employs more than 6,700 dedicated professionals who provide regulated and market-based drinking water, wastewater and other related services to an estimated 15 million people in 47 states and Ontario, Canada. Today, just 23 percent is in drought, mostly in Southern California; none of the state falls in the category of exceptional drought. "Drought shaming" snoops outed homes and businesses in places such as Beverly Hills that let their sprinklers run too long. New rules are expected to permanently ban wasteful practices, such as hosing off sidewalks and watering landscapes in the days after it rains.

A lot of them are in Tulare County, a farming powerhouse in central California's San Joaquin Valley.

At the peak of the drought, the state called for a mandatory 25 percent cut in urban water use compared with 2013 levels.
