Cornyn, Cruz part of Senate vote confirming Gorsuch to Supreme Court

Cornyn, Cruz part of Senate vote confirming Gorsuch to Supreme Court

Speaking on the Senate floor, the Kentucky Republican reminded Democrats they had used the nuclear option in 2013.

Judge Neil Gorsuch was confirmed as a Supreme Court justice by the Senate on Friday, with President Donald Trump's high-court pick approved largely along party lines after a controversial rules change a day earlier.

Democrats - angered by Republican leadership's refusal to act on former President Barack Obama's nomination of Judge Merrick Garland in the wake of Scalia's death past year - filibustered Gorsuch's nomination, labeling him an extremist.

The outcome was a major victory for Trump, his first big congressional win.

"When Judge Gorsuch ruled that corporations are people, he chose to side with corporations over workers, polluters over communities, Wall Street over consumer protections, and special interest money over citizens - this is how we end up with rules that allow Wall Street banks and hedge funds to wreak havoc on ordinary working families, with no consequences. The Supreme Court has enormous influence over the lives of everyday Ohioans, and we've already seen Judge Gorsuch's decisions have real and harmful impacts on workers who were abused by corporations and children denied their right to an education".

Democratic Sens. Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Joe Manchin (W.Va.) and Joe Donnelly (Ind.) voted with Republicans in favor of Gorsuch's confirmation. GOP Sen. Johnny Isakson of Georgia did not vote.

Gorsuch's name was on a list of potential choices Trump produced during the campaign, and was vetted by conservative groups including the Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation. That unusual external review omitted consultation with Senate Democrats, contributing to bitter Democrat complaints about the way the whole process was handled.

Gorsuch is expected to join a conservative-leaning voting bloc of justices, making five on the nine-member court. As soon as April 13, he could take part in his first private conference, where justices decide whether to hear cases - and some of them could involve gun rights, voting rights and a Colorado baker's refusal to design a cake for a same-sex couple's wedding.

Neil Gorsuch was confirmed Friday after Senate Republicans enacted the so-called "nuclear option" to overcome a filibuster by Democrat.

. But it was accomplished with a historic vote Thursday to end the U.S. Senate's filibuster rule for Supreme Court nominees. McConnell vowed that would not happen on his watch. The 60-vote filibuster requirement on Supreme Court nominees was effectively gone, and with it the last vestige of bipartisanship on presidential nominees in an increasingly polarized Senate. Unquestionably, it works to the benefit of the majority party, but, this being a democracy, majorities don't last forever.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who orchestrated the blockade, called it "the most consequential decision I've ever been involved in". Trump himself predicted to reporters aboard Air Force One that "there could be as many as four" Supreme Court vacancies for him to fill during his administration.
