Emirates allows passengers to borrow tablets on US-bound flights

To make it easier for the travellers, the Emirates Airlines have chose to provide the Travellers of First and Business Class with Microsoft's Surface Tablets as complimentary to use during a non stop flight to USA.

The Emirates move comes after rival Qatar offered a similar loan service involving laptops to premium customers flying on its direct flights to the US.

Emirates has introduced another service to mitigate the inconvenience of the recent ban on electronic devices on board US-bound flights.

From free laptops, to special packaging services in the gate - here is how Dubai's airline is dealing the the US' ban on large electronics as check in luggage.

The restrictions, prompted by reports that militant groups want to smuggle explosive devices in electronic gadgets, state that electronics larger than a mobile phone - including laptops and tablets - must be stowed with checked baggage on US-bound passenger flights.

The airline suggests that passengers eligible to receive a tablet download their work on a USB device, and then upload it onto the tablet so it can be accessed during the flight. The tablet loaner program was announced by Emirates yesterday.

Currently, around 85 per cent of Emirates' aircraft fleet is equipped with Wi-Fi on board.

TSA directive did not apply to the airline's US-bound flights via Milan (EK205) and Athens (EK209). This gives passengers some additional work time before having to be separated from their banned devices. It also does not impact flights departing from the U.S., or Emirates' flights to any other destination.

Emirates flies to 12 USA airports: Newark (EWR), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Orlando (MCO), Chicago (ORD), Boston (BOS), San Francisco (SFO), Los Angeles (LAX), Seattle (SEA), Dallas (DFW), Houston (IAH), Washington (IAD) and New York (JFK).
