Facing Democrat Filibuster on Gorsuch, McConnell Invokes Nuclear Option

Earlier Thursday, Senate Republicans voted to change the Senate rules on the confirmation of Supreme Court nominees to eliminate the filibuster.

Senate Democrats voted against ending debate on Gorsuch's nomination on a near party-line vote, leaving Republicans shy the 60-vote hurdle required by Senate rules to move on to a final confirmation vote.

Democrats expressed anger that the Senate, under Mr McConnell's guidance, refused past year to consider Democratic former President Barack Obama's nomination of appellate judge Merrick Garland to fill the same high court vacancy that Mr Trump elected Mr Gorsuch to fill. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Donnelly of IN and Michael Bennet of Colorado.

U.S. Senator Cory Gardner spoke on the Senate floor Thursday in support of Gorsuch's confirmation.

"We believe what Republicans did to Merrick Garland is worse than a filibuster", Schumer said.

Democratic opposition has been fueled by last year's drama over Merrick Garland, the Supreme Court nominee of former President Barack Obama.

Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY, employed a number of parliamentary procedures to delay the decision, but his attempt joined a number of other futile efforts Democrats tried to stop Gorsuch's nomination throughout the week. The filibuster as a tool for the minority to block legislative action remains intact.

In response, Republicans had vowed to change Senate rules by going the nuclear route and to confirm Gorsuch by the time members break for a two-week spring recess Friday. Republicans control the Senate, 52-48, and the rule change was approved by that margin. The final confirmation vote will take place Friday evening. Republicans defended him, accusing Democrats of trying to block Gorsuch out of frustration over Trump's election victory.

Murphy was referring to Judge Merrick Garland, who Obama nominated past year to fill the vacancy left by the death of Antonin Scalia, a conservative stalwart on the court.

With the filibuster removed, the second vote to end debate also ended 55-45, with McConnell voting in favor and Democratic Sen.

The last time a Republican-controlled Senate confirmed a Democratic president's Supreme Court nominee was 1888, when Grover Cleveland was in the White House, according to the Senate Historical Office. In this frame grab from video provided by Senate Television, Sen.

Democrats raised concerns that Gorsuch could be too friendly to corporations and may allow limits on political contributions to erode.

He said Republicans denied "the constitutional prerogative of a president with 11 months left in his term". "Starting in 2013, all presidential nominees have needed just 51 votes to end debate".
