2 inmates charged with killing 4 in South Carolina prison

Four inmates have been found dead inside a housing unit at one of the state's prisons.

Two convicts each serving a life sentence for killing a mother and her child have been charged with murder in the strangulation deaths of four inmates inside a SC prison.

Coroner Gary Watts confirms he's investigating four deaths at the facility, but wouldn't give any details about how the inmates died.

The warrants say the men worked together to choke all four inmates. It is also home to a Maximum Security Unit, where the most risky and violent prisoners are housed.

The State Law Enforcement Division and Corrections police investigated this case.

A few months before, two inmates serving life sentences took two nurses hostage and held them with homemade knives for about seven hours, according to CNN affiliate WACH.

King's projected release date was October 2020.

Kirkland Correctional Institution is a level 3 prison that houses inmates considered to be the most unsafe and violent offenders sentenced in the state.

Denver Jordan Simmons, 35, of Flintstone, Ga., and Jacob Theophilus Philip, 25, of Summerville each are charged with four counts of murder, State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry said.

Philip was in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, 26, and her 8-year-old daughter in Berkeley County. He was scheduled for release in August 2020. Before male inmates 17 and older are assigned to a prison across the state, all start there. Kelley was serving 15 years for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.

In 2016, a corrections officer was sacked for allegedly hitting a handcuffed inmate in the face. They were charged with misconduct while in office and attempted murder.
