Davis Cup: Australia leads US 2-0 in quarterfinal

Davis Cup: Australia leads US 2-0 in quarterfinal

Nick Kyrgios capped off a fantastic weekend for the green and gold with a straight-sets win over Sam Querrey in Brisbane.

After a similar lull in the third set, he fought back from 4-1 down to close the match and the quarter-final 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 6-4.

"Jordan played great yesterday, deserved the win and was the better player, but today we had to regroup and come out and get the win", said world number 15 Sock, who will face the in-form Kyrgios in the opening reverse singles match on Sunday.

David Goffin beat Paolo Lorenzi 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 at Charleroi to give host Belgium a winning lead over Italy.

The victor moves on to play the victor between Italy and Belgium.

Sock replaced Querrey in Saturday's doubles and paired up with Steve Johnson to beat Sam Groth and John Peers 3-6 6-3 6-2 2-6 6-3 to keep the visitors alive at 2-1.

Thompson, playing only his second Davis Cup tie, went into the match against the American number one as the huge underdog.

Nick Kyrgios played a big part in the win as he put Australia in the Davis Cup semi-finals with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 6-4 victory over Sam Querrey, the world No.25, making the score 3-1.

The two countries have 60 Davis Cup titles between them but Australia have not won since they bagged their 28th crown in 2003, while the USA snared their 32nd a decade ago.

Australia Davis Cup captain Leyton Hewitt was "really proud" of Nick Kyrgios and Jordan Thompson after both landed wins over United States rivals.

Isner said he ran into an in-form player.

"I'm really proud of both boys, but there's still a bloody long way to go", he said.

"I'm sure he'd much rather play in a dead rubber", Hewitt said. Despite being 35 years old and one of the oldest players in every tournament he enters, Roger Federer is once again the dominant player on the ATP Tour.

Australian captain Leyton Hewitt was celebrating with Kyrgios, and for good reason, it is only the second time in 11 years Australia has made it to this stage of the Davis Cup.

The Australian comfortably took the second set but there were signs of frustration again in the third as he fell 1-4 behind before responding with five games in a row to secure victory.

Kyrgios, so often seen as a lone wolf in world tennis, was swamped by teammates after serving his 20th and 21st aces on the last two points of the match.

After the teams split the first four sets in the tense doubles match that lasted almost four hours, there were seven set points in the decisive fifth set.
