Building that housed Portsmouth restaurant collapses in fire

Building that housed Portsmouth restaurant collapses in fire

A GoFundMe.com effort has been launched to help raise money for the victims of a 6-alarm fire this morning in Portsmouth that left tenants homeless and three buildings - including a popular local eatery - destroyed. The flames have since spread to a neighboring building. "When we came out it didn't really seem that bad.but as time went on there was more and more smoke and eventually before the building collapsed there were flames shooting above the building".

Fire officials got the call at 12:30 a.m. The fire reached five alarms as crews from the Seacoast and ME and MA worked to keep it from spreading, Achilles said. The building was reduced to a pile of rubble.

Achilles said the future of the remaining building would depend on an evaluation by a structural engineer, who was waiting to get inside for a look as firefighters continued dousing hotspots.

Those buildings include the State Street Saloon and surrounding buildings with the address 270 and 276, one of which is an apartment building.

There's no word yet on how the fire started. "It was extremely smoky, so it was the least we could do", Stewart said.

One firefighter is being treated for minor injuries.
