Microsoft Acquires Kubernetes Orchestration Specialist Deis To Step Up Its Container Game

Microsoft Acquires Kubernetes Orchestration Specialist Deis To Step Up Its Container Game

Kubernetes, a container orchestration tool, is Deis' primary focus.

For a starter, Kubernetes is a Google-backed open source container deployment and management tool that provides automated deployment, scaling, and operations of application containers. Fortune notes that containers make up a hot category as many enterprises are turning to public clouds such as, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Corporation's Azure to run their applications.

"With this increase in agility and portability, containers are helping to make applications the new currency in the cloud".

The new partnership should also make it easier for users to work with Microsoft's existing container offering, including Linux and Windows Server Containers, Hyper-V Containers and Azure Container Service.

In his own blog post, Gabe Monroy, chief technology officer of Deis, said the Deis team will continue with its contributions to Workflow, Helm, and Steward, as well as "maintaining our deep engagement with the Kubernetes community". "We look forward to making Azure the best place to run containerized workloads", he wrote. The terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

For some who might not be aware, Engine Yard already acquired Deis back in 2015, so Microsoft is purchasing it directly from Engine Yard, although it made no mention of such in the official announcement.

Microsoft's acquisition of the company provides proof that Kubernetes is beating out rival technologies at the container orchestration layer, said Mike Kavis, principal architect at Cloud Technology Partners, a Boston-based solution provider.

Once Microsoft loses an enterprise to AWS, it will be a hard sell to get them to move to Azure. The projects incorporate container technologies into application platforms combining technologies from Google, Docker and CoreOS.

In addition to expertise in the development of container software technology, the acquisition would also add open-source software development "depth" to Microsoft, Guthrie added.

The purchase is obviously for Microsoft to leverage the technology, but as with any other acquisitions, it entails the talent behind the technology, too. The Seattle-based tech giant still enjoyed a big lead in the cloud computing market thanks to its huge head start and vast resources, but Microsoft Azure is growing fast and now offers comparable service.
