Malala Yousafzai Receives Highest United Nations Honour To Promote Girls Education

Malala Yousafzai Receives Highest United Nations Honour To Promote Girls Education

With this, Malala also became the first person to be designated by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres since he assumed office in January. At 19, she is the youngest Messenger of Peace, the highest honour given by the United Nations.

The 19-year-old became a global symbol of the fight for girls' education after being shot in Pakistan's Swat valley in 2012 for opposing Taliban restrictions on female education.

Yousafzai also spoke about the humanitarian crisis overseas, her push for girls' education and her own plans for college. All Muslim girls believe in education and believe in peace.

Accepting the accolade, Yousafzai underscored the importance of education, especially education of girls, for advancing communities and societies.

Her appearance was kept secret from all but a few people involved in setting up the the visit, lancasteronline reported. "And I think he needs to go to these refugee camps", Yousafzai said.

Yousafzai's advocacy brought retaliation from the Taliban, which preferred to see women and girls oppressed. Malala's activism garnered global attention several years ago when she survived after being shot by the Taliban in 2012.

Malala was flown to a military hospital in Peshawar in critical condition.

"I'm getting this award, but I also want to represent Pakistan, my country, because I want people to know that this is me representing Pakistan, not extremists and terrorists - they are not Pakistanis, they are not us", she said. "And it is a clear evidence that no one can stop me".

"I pray that you continue to open your homes and your hearts to the world's most defenseless children and families", she said, "and I hope your neighbors will follow your example".

"Her statements regarding Pakistan, Swat and being a Muslim were very important as it was a message to the world", she added.

"She took that bullet as a symbol of the absolutely non-negotiable and urgent need to make education an innate part of growing up for every girl, in every place and for all times", she remarked. The fund promotes 12 years of free, safe and quality education for girls worldwide.

Malala Yousafzai: I'm really honoured to be given this title of Messenger of Peace, and to me it is more responsibility, which I have already had, which I was already taking, for girls' education - raising awareness, asking world leaders to invest more in education.
