SpaceX Successfully Launches Satellite With Its First Recycled Rocket

SpaceX Successfully Launches Satellite With Its First Recycled Rocket

Musk said: "It's an awesome day for space as a whole".

Thursday's Falcon 9 launch was used the put a communications satellite in order, for Luxembourg-based satellite-operator SES SA.

It was previously used on a mission in April previous year and refurbished and tested on its return, still sporting its nine original engines.

The Falcon 9's first stage for this mission was previously used on the successful CRS-8 mission in April 2016.

Reusable rockets would cut the cost of space travel significantly. Approximately 32 minutes after launch the rocket will separate from the satellite and begin its descent. Thursday's landing proves that it's possibly to fly and re-fly an orbital class booster, which Musk said is the most expensive part of the rocket. The Amazon founder has launched and landed a suborbital rocket five times but is yet to reuse any of them.

"This is going to be ultimately a huge revolution in space flight", Musk said during a webcast from the launch control center at Cape Canaveral immediately after the Falcon 9's autonomous touchdown. According to Musk, the fairing alone costs $6 million to manufacture, and so recovery is vital to further reducing the cost of launches.

Following a successful main engine cutoff and first stage separation, Falcon 9's 14-story reusable core returned to Earth and landed on the "Of Course I Still Love You" droneship that was stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

"It's an wonderful day for space as a whole, for the space industry". Re-using rockets will save on manufacturing costs. "It's been 15 years to get to this point".

As for the cost of Thursday's launch, Martin Halliwell, chief technology officer at SES, has declined to say publicly the exact amount.

When in space the SES-10 satellite will be one of the largest satellites providing connectivity to Latin America and will be used as part of the Simon Bolivar 2 satellite network. "It will allow people to live on other planets", she said, referencing Musk's ambitious vision to colonize Mars. It was originally planned for later that year, but SpaceX's uncrewed rocket explosion on September 1 and the months-long accident investigation that followed delayed the flight.

"We made a little bit of history today, actually".
