US, Russia jab over Syria before diplomatic talks in Moscow

US, Russia jab over Syria before diplomatic talks in Moscow

"We can't let this happen again".

"We want to relieve the suffering of the Syrian people". While Britain stressed pressure on Russian Federation and removing Assad, Germany's Gabriel emphasized that Russian Federation and Iran must be part of the peace process for Syria. Tillerson said it was clear the US saw no role for Assad in Syria's future, given that he had lost legitimacy.

Leading US allies have failed to reach agreement on new sanctions on Syria and Russian Federation in the wake of a chemical attack that killed more than 80 people.

The way forward in Syria can't include Assad, whose recent chemical attack against his own people were abetted by those countries - Russian Federation and Iran - that have allowed him to remain in power, Trudeau told a news conference. It's unclear whether he will also meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He added: "This place will serve as an inspiration to us all".

French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault also told reporters that the G7 ministers agreed that "no future in Syria is possible with Bashar Assad", Ayrault told reporters.

Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano said the USA intervention had offered "a window of opportunity to construct a new positive condition for the political process in Syria".

The missile attack has increased expectations that Trump is ready to adopt a tougher stance with respect to Russian Federation, and that he is ready to engage in world affairs, instead of following the more isolationist stance he had previously taken. And a majority - 54 percent - say they are "uneasy" about Trump's approach to the situation in Syria, with just 41 percent expressing confidence in him.

At a press conference in Sarajevo, the Republican senator said the United States "is the most powerful nation on earth" and "can do both at the same time".

The two-day G-7 meeting in the Tuscan walled city of Lucca is bringing together the foreign ministers of France, Germany, Britain, Japan and Canada, the US and current G-7 president Italy, as well as European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini.

A key focus since the chemical attack has been on increasing pressure on Russia, Assad's strongest ally, which has used its own military to keep Assad in power.

The ministry said in a three-page statement issued ahead of Tillerson's arrival later on Tuesday that the outcome of the talks is important not only for the Russia-U.S. ties but "for the overall atmosphere on the world stage".

The official alleges, with corroboration from other sources, that Russian Federation flew a drone above a hospital as victims of the nerve gas attack started to enter, AP reports.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Sunday that its priority in Syria remains defeating the Islamic State.

Speaking after the meeting, Tillerson denounced Russia's "failure" to ensure the elimination of chemical weapons in Syria and said it had not made enough progress in peace talks.

U.S. Senator John McCain says stopping Syrian President Bashar Assad's "murderous rampage" does not preclude America from fighting the Islamic State group.

"If they disrespect us, and if they cross us, fine".

Given this, the USA attack on Syria last week in retaliation for what it said was a chemical weapons attack by Assad's forces on Syrian civilians confounded many diplomats.

The foreign ministers of Italy, the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Japan and Canada then sat around a table to begin their talks.

Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano, the host of a two-day G-7 meeting in the ancient Tuscan town of Lucca, called a parallel gathering for Tuesday with counterparts from Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Qatar, a ministry official said.
