Dustin Johnson to play at Wells Fargo Championships in May

Dustin Johnson pulled out of last week's Masters Tournament due to a back injury he sustained prior to the event. He showed up Thursday morning to give it a try, but Johnson wound up withdrawing before teeing a ball on the first hole. Johnson confirmed Thursday that he would make his return for the Wells Fargo Championship.

David Winkle of Hambric Sports Management said Tuesday that Johnson's "range of motion is certainly better, but he is following the protocol and recommendations of his doctors and trainers".

Johnson had just returned to his rented house in Augusta following the cancellation of the Par 3 contest on Wednesday afternoon when he slipped on a wooden staircase and "landed hard" on his back.

Dustin Johnson, the world's No. 1-ranked golfer who missed the Masters because of a back injury, will return to action at the Wells Fargo Championship in Wilmington, N.C., May 4-7.

Johnson, whose fiancée, Paulina Gretzky, is pregnant with the couple's second child, said then he had planned to take three weeks off following the Masters. The tournament, typically held at Quail Hollow, has moved to Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington for the 2017 competition, as Quail Hollow is hosting the PGA Championship later this summer. Johnson has 15 PGA Tour wins since joining the tour in 2008.

Players have until Friday, April 28, at 5 p.m. eastern time to commit to the Wells Fargo Championship and can withdraw from the tournament at any time.
