McCain: Russia cooperated with Syria in chemical attack

Gabriel urged Pristina to finalise a border deal with Montenegro and resume dialogue with Belgrade, saying no dialogue with Serbia would scupper any chance of European Union membership.

Gabriel is due to meet with Vucic and Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic on Wednesday before traveling on to Kosovo, where he will meet Kosovan Prime Minister Isa Mustafa and Foreign Minister Enver Hoxhaj. Gabriel urged Pristina to improve relations with neighboring Ser.

"I will assure my counterparts: The path toward the European Union remains open if you choose reforms and progress instead of divisions and stalemate", said the German minister, who is to visit Kosovo on April 13.

Counterterrorism cooperation of Serbia and United States can prove to be of vital importance, U.S. Senator John McCain said at a joint press conference with Serbia's incumbent prime minister and president-elect Aleksandar Vucic on Monday.

Gabriel, who was in Serbia a day earlier, advised Kosovo and Serbia to continue dialogue and "first of all to avoid provocations; second, to accept the reality; third, to care about how to make life easier for the people and that this has to be the focus of the negotiations".

During his one-day visit to Serbia, McCain attended a training between country's elite SAJ police unit, a detachment of the U.S. Special Operations Command and a military unit from Slovenia, a ex-Yugoslav republic and now North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member.

Vucic said the two also discussed regional stability, including talks between Serbia and Kosovo on normalising relations, and the political crises in ethnically divided Macedonia and Bosnia. Since declaring independence from Serbia nine years ago, tensions have remained high between Pristina and Belgrade, as the latter still considers Kosovo a breakaway province.

McCain, speaking while on a tour of the western Balkans, the European region where Russian Federation has been vying for increased influence, said the US should take out Syria's air force as part of stopping Syrian President Bashar Assad from repeating such attacks in the future.

In 1999 USA led the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation bombing that ended with the withdrawal of Serbian troops from Kosovo.

"Kosovo, like all other sovereign states, has the right to form an army but it should not be used to raise the emotional tensions".

Thaci bowed to global pressure and agreed to postpone the army transformation.
