Uber's PR head resigns amid tumultuous time for company

Uber's PR head resigns amid tumultuous time for company

On Wednesday, April 12, 2017, Uber said Whetstone, the company's head of communications, has chose to leave the ride-hailing company.

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, who announced the resignation, said the decision was Rachel's.

No reason has been given as to why she has left the firm, Whetstone has been with the company since 2015, she left her position at Google.

Whetstone tells Recode that "a strong and brilliant woman will be taking my place", which is in reference to Jill Hazelbaker, a colleague of Whetstone and was most recently the head of communications at Snap. "I joined Uber because I love the product - and that love is as strong today as it was when I booked my very first ride six years ago." she said.

Jill Hazelbaker, who also worked with Whetstone at Google, will replace her former colleague and take over the role. Prior to her tech career, she worked in campaigns for political candidates such as NY mayor Michael Bloomberg's and Sen.

The investigation was triggered by a blog post written by Susan Fowler, a former Uber employee and best-selling author who claimed that she was propositioned for sex by a male superior on her first day on the job.

She arrived at Uber in June 2015 after a decade of working in PR for Google in the United Kingdom and U.S. Accusations of sexual harassment and discrimination made by a former engineer prompted an internal investigation led by a former United States attorney general and the firm's hopes for a self-driving auto programme are under threat from a lawsuit claiming it stole technology from Google. But he didn't explain why one of the company's longest-serving senior female executives was leaving.

In February, a top engineering executive, Amit Singhal, left Uber five weeks after his hire was announced. This time it's the company's head of communications, Rachel Whetstone, a person who has steered Uber forward in the midst of its recent scandals and heated press coverage.

Whetstone follows other high-profile executives who have left Uber in recent months.

Ed Baker, the vice president of product and growth, left a few days later. In a memo to employees, CEO Travis Kalanick called her a "force of nature" who was "was way ahead of the game when it came to numerous changes we needed to make as a company".

After footage of the row emerged, Kalanick admitted he needed "leadership help".
