India Again Warns Pakistan Against Executing Kulbhushan Jadhav

Shashi Tharoor MP said that the issue of death sentence slapped on former Indian Navy officer Kulbhushan Jadhav by Pakistan should not be politicized. And, any conditions that Pakistan might put on giving Jadhav consular access "is to deny consular access", the MEA's spokesman said.

Jadhav, arrested in March previous year, was handed the sentence by a Pakistan military court on charges of espionage and sabotage three days ago.

"I won't like to speculate on the steps about the future at this stage, or who we will talk to and who will not talk to", he said.

"The disappearance of a retired Pakistani military officer in Nepal in murky circumstances suggests that the spy wars between India and Pakistan are spiralling in unpredictable directions", it said.

Sushma Swaraj, India's foreign minister, has also assured legislators that the government would go "out of its way" to save Kulbhushan Jadhav from the death sentenced handed out, according to Indian media reports.

"We are not in a position to judge the process or to have a position on this particular case", the United Nations secretary general's spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said in response to a question from an Indian journalist at the regular noon press briefing.

Roughly two hours later, Indian news agency ANI reported that the Indian High Commission in Pakistan would try again to get consular access to Jadhav.

Swaraj dismissed Jadhav's trial as a farce and said Pakistan had ignored 13 separate requests in the past year to be permitted to offer him consular services.

Asif said Jadhav had the right to move the Pakistan Army's Court of Appeal against his conviction within 60 days, followed by submission of mercy pleas to the army chief and the President.

The High Commissioner said the charges against Jadhav were such that he could not be tried in a civil court.

"The proceedings that have led to the sentence against Jadhav are farcical in the absence of any credible evidence against him".

India on Tuesday had warned Pakistan that Kulbhushan Yadav's hanging would be considered "premeditated murder" by the people of India as well as the Indian state. The verdict is indefensible.
