Israel Police: Palestinian stabs woman in Jerusalem

Israel Police: Palestinian stabs woman in Jerusalem

Local media said the attacker stabbed the woman multiple times and was armed with a kitchen knife.

A pregnant 30-year-old fell when the train made an emergency stop, and a 50-year-old was hurt while fleeing the scene.

Police say Mr Tamimi, a resident of Ras al-Amud in east Jerusalem, was recently released from a psychiatric hospital.

The University of Birmingham student was on exchange with the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. "We extend our deepest condolences to her family and we share in their sorrow", it said in a statement.

"The university condemns such acts of terror that harm innocent people, and especially a student who came to Jerusalem to study and widen her academic horizons".

Commander Yoram Halevy, in charge of the Israel police's Jerusalem district said that the Palestinian man who conducted the stabbing is a "mentally unstable" 57 year-old Jerusalemite, and has a prior criminal police record for domestic violence.

Medics from the Magen David Adom ambulance service performed CPR on the woman at the scene before taking her to Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus, where she was eventually pronounced dead, a hospital spokesperson said.

The incident occurred when security in Jerusalem was at a very high level with tens of thousands of Christian pilgrims in the old city for Good Friday along with Jews celebrating the week-long Passover festival.

Israel's President Reuven Rivlin has condoled the loss of life in the incident.

The attack took place around 12.50 p.m. next to the walls surrounding the Old City, Efe news reported.

It would make the attack the latest in a two-year wave of Palestinians carrying out stabbings and other assaults against Israeli civilians and security forces.

The Palestinian Authority denies incitement and charges that in many cases, Israel has used excessive force in thwarting attackers.

"We reaffirm our commitment to the UN-approved principles for a Palestinian-Israeli settlement, which include the status of East Jerusalem as the capital of the future Palestinian state".
