It's Not Cool to Hate Anne Hathaway Anymore

Unable to resist the PBR that surrounds her, Gloria tunes in to the news the next day to discover the consequences of her face-planting: "I killed a shitload of people because I was acting like a drunk idiot again".

SUDEIKIS: Gosh, it may have been as deep into it for me, when it became different, different...

FROM COINAGE: Could You Afford to Go to the Oscars? "I understand in the context of [her new movie 'Colossal, ' in which she plays an out-of-work blogger], why it should be brought up". It's telling, though, that so numerous people who slam Hathaway for wanting it too much are the same people who criticize Kristen Stewart for not wanting it enough. And it was a great way to be silly and kind of do things off the cuff. "Think about it. They blow it out".

But such is the serendipitous journey of Colossal, a shrewdly ambitious genre mash-up that quickly got its first casting choices in an ensemble that also includes Jason Sudeikis, Dan Stevens, and Tim Blake Nelson. I'm being vague on objective, but trust me that it's very unique.

The sheer hutzpah it took to mount this is what impressed me most about the picture. "I didn't know what I wanted to do, really, I didn't know how to articulate what I wanted to do".

With his latest film, Colossal, arriving in theaters, we got a chance to sit down with him back at Fantastic Fest to discuss the making of his monster movie masked as a metaphor for addiction. And now, because of the time we live in, I think words and pictures are carrying a much greater weight.

"I believe that all of our actions, however small, have consequences and we affect each other", Hathaway says. "That happened to me a couple times where I started a song and kind of had to cut it off really fast because it's so inappropriate".

Even Hathaway's most maligned moments are better than you remembered. "We had a third scene partner in Anne's belly, so there was already a gingerness that was expected... not that it wouldn't be expected beforehand", said Sudeikis. Austin Stowell also appears as one of the few to learn about Gloria's connection to the monster, but he is curiously underdeveloped. Weird, right? Well, that doesn't even begin to describe this one, which has a second half that's downright bonkers, including a third act you'll never see coming.

HATHAWAY: I fell asleep during it, because of all the reasons why you fall asleep when you listen to Dark Side of the Moon.
