UEFA Opens Disciplinary Cases Over Lyon v Besiktas Europa League Game Violence

The Lyon vs Besiktas game began with a 45 min delay.

Lyon and Besiktas, the Turkish champions, finally kicked a ball at 8.50pm.

According to an AFP reporter, Lyon supporters poured onto the pitch as they attempted to protect themselves from firecrackers and other objects raining down from the stands above.

There were chaotic scenes ahead of Lyon's Europa League tie with Besiktas on Thursday as hundreds of fans flooded the pitch.

"Disciplinary proceedings have been opened following the UEFA Europa League quarter-final match between Olympique Lyonnais and Beşiktaş JK (2-1), played on 13 April in France", the statement read.

However, some Lyon fans also sought to confront their Turkish counterparts outside the stadium before the game - and then inside the stadium - with dozens clashing.

With time running out, Corentin Tolisso levelled from close range and Lyon's turnaround was completed inside two minutes as the veteran Morel struck to earn Les Gones a 2-1 first-leg lead.

Besiktas fans in the top tier threw objects onto the home fans below, and armed Lyon fans also broke into the visitors area to start fights.
