Doubts over Islamic motive in Dortmund football bus blasts

Doubts over Islamic motive in Dortmund football bus blasts

Borussia Dortmund defender Marc Bartra has said he experienced the "hardest 15 minutes" of his life after fracturing his wrist in Tuesday's bomb attack on the team bus.

A third claim has now been sent to the German newspaper Tagesspiegel, from a far-right group claiming it was behind the triple bombing in Dortmund and threatening further attacks.

Three identical letters close to the site of the blasts initially suggested an Islamist link, but questions over the authenticity of the claim have been raised.

"As of now, all infidel actors, singers, athletes and all prominent personalities in Germany and other crusader nations are on a death list of the Islamic State", the letter said.

Bild newspaper cited an investigator as saying: "The overall circumstances lead us to believe it's most likely that the perpetrators have a right-wing background".

The source also said that specialist knowledge was required to use the military detonators, which are not easy to get.

"IS normally does not negotiate in such a way", said state prosecutor Frauke Koehler to German media.

He said what happened was not just an attack on BVB "but rather an attack on the Federal Republic of Germany".

"The investigations are continuing in all directions and are running at full-speed", she said, adding that about 100 officers were participating in the probe.

However, according to reports in Germany, police investigators suspect that the letters were written to pin blame on radical Islamists and that the attack could have been carried out by political extremists or violent football fans.

After the horrific events of Tuesday night, when Islamic terrorists nearly succeeded in blowing up Borussia Dortmund's team bus, Marc Bartra, who was injured in the attack, wanted to send a letter to his Instagram followers to show the improvement in his health.

Spanish defender Marc Bartra suffered injuries to his wrist and arm caused by shattered glass from the explosion, which happened about 90 minutes before Dortmund were due to play Monaco at the nearby Westfalenstadion.

The substitution of Marco Reus at half-time in Borussia Dortmund's 3-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday was merely a precaution, Thomas Tuchel confirmed.
