Minn. health officials confirm 5 more measles cases

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed a second case measles in Michigan.

Back in late March Michigan saw its first case of measles in 2017, that case was related to travel.

Two restaurants are working with the Washtenaw County Public Health to keep employees and customers safe from exposure to measles, a highly contagious disease that has seen a disturbing resurgence in recent years. The local individual is an adult and was a passenger on the same flight when the first individual was contagious.

Measles is a viral infection that can result in pneumonia, brain inflammation, hospitalization and death. The symptoms are high fever, with cough and watery eyes.

A raised, red rash appears on the third to fifth day of illness, and the rash typically starts on the face and spreads down the body and out to the arms and legs.

The MDHHS says that someone with measles can be contagious for a few days before they start showing typical symptoms, which increases the possibility of exposing others to the infection.

Measles is highly contagious and spreads easily by coughs, sneezes or close contact.

State and local health officials say the best line of defense is vaccination and encourage it for all persons, especially those traveling internationally.

"This outbreak is about unvaccinated children, not specific communities", said Minnesota Health Commissioner Dr. Ed Ehlinger. Nearly all measles cases in this country have occurred among the unvaccinated.

The MDHHS said measles was eliminated from the United States in 2000, but emerges every year among global travelers, where it remains a common illness. Nationally in 2014 there were 667 cases, including five in MI.

The majority of people who got measles were unvaccinated. "Measles can spread when it reaches a community in the US where groups of people are unvaccinated".

People from Bay State may have been infected with measles due to European tourists.

According to the CDC, measles is still widespread in many parts of the world, including countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Pacific.

The two people are not family or related to one another.

You can find a fact sheet about measles on the WCPH website, and more information on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. Doctors advise that the only viable method of prevention is to get vaccinated.
