Russia, Iran and Syria issue warning to US

Tillerson held tense meetings on Wednesday in Moscow with Lavrov and Russian President Vladimir Putin, their first face-to-face encounters since Donald Trump became president in January. "I think he had a very successful meeting", Trump said. It was stark evidence that the president is moving ever further from his campaign promises to establish better ties with Moscow.

Still, the frenzy of the chemical strike and the possibility of another U.S strike are now slim, with observers saying the administration of President Bashar al-Assad, and his allies, Russia and Iran, well-absorbed the US strike through a diplomatic attack in the UN Security Council with the Russian veto.

In the background is the disappointed retreat of Russia's euphoric reception of Donald Trump's election victory.

The Russian government called for an independent UN investigation into the chemical weapon attack, but on Wednesday vetoed a UN Security Council resolution condemning it and specifically calling on the Syrian government to cooperate with a UN investigation mission. "It may not happen", Trump said.

CNN reporters point out that their news organization actually interviewed victims, and the news organization and many others also report that us military and intelligence officials intercepted communications implicating the Syrian military ahead of the attack.

Reporters asked whether Tillerson had introduced evidence at Wednesday's meetings of Russian interference in the US election.

It appears that Russian Federation felt stung by the United States attack on Syria and no amount of USA convincing can convince Moscow that Damascus planned and executed the chemical attack. Washington warned Moscow, and Russian troops at the base were not hit.

The Russian and Syrian governments have both denied involvement in the chemical attack. But Tillerson repeated the administration's new belief that "the reign of the Assad family is coming to an end".

Beyond Syria, Russia's alleged meddling in the U.S. presidential election also hovered over what was the first face-to-face encounter between Putin and any Trump administration Cabinet member.

Lavrov said that breaking global law is "unnacceptable" and such "aggressive actions are aimed at undermining the peace process".

"We have not seen a single fact, or even a hint of facts", he said. They honestly don't know what to do. "No one showed us anything, no one said anything, although we repeatedly asked to produce the details on which these unfounded accusations lie".

Still, Tillerson sought to stress the positives from his meetings.

The result: not only no warm up in relations between the two superpowers, but, as Tillerson put it, "a low level of trust between our countries", a relation that "the world's two foremost nuclear powers can not have".

But such hopes appeared optimistic as the diplomats outlined their sharply diverging views on Syria.

In Russia's view, the probe conducted by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons should be widened to include experts from many nations, he said.
