Borini gives Sunderland lifeline by clinching West Ham draw

Borini gives Sunderland lifeline by clinching West Ham draw

Sunderland are inching closer to relegation from the Premier League despite rescuing a 2-2 home draw with West Ham at the Stadium of Light.

West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic refuses to criticise goalkeeper Darren Randolph for the goals his side conceded during their 2-2 draw with Sunderland. But I think great credit to the lads for coming back, fighting back first half and the second half. Tough-tackling midfielder, Lee Cattermole used his programme notes to outline the seriousness of the situation and offer a final rally cry, saying: "The situation boils down to this - we have seven games left in which to give it everything to try and keep this club in the Premier League".

"We did it last season, the three of us up front - me, Wahbi and Jermain Defoe - we did well".

"We had momentum after each goal but we couldn't finish them off or punish them which is disappointing". And even after Sunderland had equalised, via Wahbi Khazri's in-swinging 26th-minute corner, every time Moyes left the dug-out he got the same unpleasant receptions.

Moyes said: "Billy has gone to hospital but he is fine". We should have used both goals as an advantage for the momentum.

Sunderland conceded within 60 seconds of the restart against Manchester United, and they were once again caught napping as West Ham swiftly restored their advantage.

Wahbi Khazri and Fabio Borini at least brought the Black Cats' lengthy goalless run to an end, but it was nearly certainly a case of too little, too late as the hosts finally rediscovered some fight. I thought we played better today, I thought we passed it better and had bits of control of the game at different times.

In 10 minutes of added time, West Ham right-back Sam Byram was sent off for a second booking, but Sunderland couldn't capitalise. "I can only tell you my choice has been to play other people because of what I have seen", said the 53-year-old who, earlier this season, turned down a chance to sign the now unattached former Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov. I'm not happy with the way we conceded either goal.

West Ham are surely safe, having moved nine points clear of the drop zone, but Sunderland's hopes of survival look slim despite closing to within nine points of 17th-place Hull City, having played a game less. The ball was not very high in the air so he could [not] have seen it all the way along.
