Jurgen Klopp hails Liverpool victory at 'tough' West Brom

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp left the touchline at The Hawthorns with three points and frayed nerves after Roberto Firmino scored the only goal against West Brom.

Liverpool's win leaves them third in the league as they moved back above Manchester City - who beat Southampton 3-0 on Saturday.

After struggling to break down West Brom's resistance, Liverpool went ahead through a set-piece on the stroke of half-time.

Nacer Chadli should have added to his five goals for Albion but swung a boot at fresh air after Matt Phillips hooked the ball towards him at the back post.

Roberto Firmino headed home at a free kick in first-half stoppage time.

Robson-Kanu, who was in the side to replace the misfiring Salomon Rondon, then missed the best chance of the half when he volleyed tamely straight at Simon Mignolet from the edge of the area, after being put clear by Jake Livermore.

It was, nearly inevitably, Firmino who broke the deadlock at the end of an unenthralling half, as James Milner's free kick was flicked on by Lucas into the path of the 25-year-old forward, who swooped unmarked at the far post to head home. After the interval, Milner had a chance to make it 2-0 but he volleyed over at the far post from Firmino's cross from the right.

Pulis' men would go no closer to getting on terms - the Arsenal win before last month's global break standing as the only game in the last seven where they have found the net.

"We needed to adapt to what West Brom wanted to do".

"In the second half, we did this much better".

- West Brom have failed to score in four consecutive Premier League games for the first time since April 2003.

Liverpool's remaining games are against teams outside the top eight as the club seeks a return to the Champions League after a two-year absence.
