Rod Carew's new heart, kidney came from late NFL player

Rod Carew's new heart, kidney came from late NFL player

According to Garrett Downing of the Ravens' official website, Reuland died in December at the age of 29 of a brain aneurysm, but his organ donation saved Carew's life.

"I learned about discipline", Carew said. He was undrafted in 2011. He was briefly signed to their practice squad in October 2014, and then brought back as a free agent in training camp last July, and spent the rest of the month of August on the team's training camp roster before being released towards the end of the preseason.

Carew was a seven-time AL batting champion during his 19-year Major League Baseball career, from 1967 to 1985. Reuland most recently played for the Ravens for four games in 2015.

Carew returned home in late January, seven weeks after the transplant surgery.

Reuland was on life support as Carew's condition -- the result of heart attack and two blood clots in his brain -- worsened to the point he was moved to the top of the transplant list. He was 29. Over the final hours Mary spent with her oldest child, she kept her right ear on his chest.

Three months after the successful transplant, Carew met Reuland's mother for the first time.

The Reuland family eventually called the donation company, even though it was recommended they wait a year before making contact with the recipient, according to the AMA.

Carew was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1991 after 19 seasons with the Angels and Twins. He put in a year with a left ventricular help gadget in his trunk taking care of the work of his harmed heart.

This miracle came 20 years after Carew's daughter, Michelle, passed away at 18 after she couldn't find a match for a blood marrow transplant she needed after suffering from leukemia. Just over a year later his name was added to the list of people waiting for a heart transplant.

Mary was cooking dinner while Konrad was filling out a drivers license renewal form.

"The whole thing is just unbelievable", Carew told American Heart Association News.

"In terms of health, his heart was a Ferrari", Reuland's mother, Mary, told the San Jose Mercury News this week. Rod was released from the hospital on February 14, and the Reulands invited Rod and his family to their home on March 2. “There it is, ” she said softly, breaking into a full smile and laying her head onto Rods shoulder. It was discovered that Reuland's heart and kidney to a 71-year-old man less than five miles away.

The American Heart Association revealed new details on Friday about how the late tight end's mom and Carew's wife figured out the two athletes were forever bound.

She told the American Heart Association that at first it was "too farfetched" that Reuland would be the donor.
