Spain rescues 125 migrants crossing sea at night

Spain rescues 125 migrants crossing sea at night

The bodies of seven migrants, including a small boy, were found during the latest rescue operations off Libya, a Maltese NGO and the Italian coastguard said Sunday.

MSF said two of their ships, Aquarius and Prudence, had rescued about 1,000 people in nine boats.

So far today #Prudence and #Aquarius have saved ~1000 #people in 9 different boats from the sea.

SOS Mediterranee, which operates the Aquarius jointly with MSF, posted a video showing women singing with happiness after their rescue.

After a long and hard day like this one, these voices and songs of joy and happiness are our best reward.

So far rescuers have pulled 453 people to safety, but were forced to suspend the operation overnight with their rescue vessel the Phoenix running at full capacity.

The International Organization for Migration reports that as of April 9, some 664 migrants have died on the Mediterranean, with 90 percent on the Libya-to-Italy route.

"We have never had to deal with so many people at the same time", said Pauline Schmidt, spokesperson for Jugend Rette.

More than 24,000 migrants arrived in Italy from Libya during the first three months of the year, up from 18,000 during the same period last year, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

"Where are Frontex boats in a day like this?" it asked.

We are still conducting operations with a new boat contact spotted early this morning.

"How many would have died?"

Rescuers said a teenager had been found dead in one of the rubber boats on Friday during the "very difficult" rescues.

"Every day people continue to risk their lives while we, as civil society, stand witness", MOAS director Regina Catrambone said. In 2017, the sea continues to be a graveyard.

Migrants on a wooden boat are rescued by the Malta-based NGO Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) in the central Mediterranean in worldwide waters off the coast of Sabratha in Libya on April 15.
