California State Assembly Passes Resolution Commemorating Legacy of Jackie Robinson

California State Assembly Passes Resolution Commemorating Legacy of Jackie Robinson

Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball on April 15, 1947.

Seventy years after his Major League debut and 45 years after his death, America is still heavily indebted to the great Jackie Robinson. With every player wearing his iconic No. 42 on Saturday, many players voiced their support for the legend before taking the field.

On the day every major-league player will wear No. 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson, the first black man to play in the major leagues, the late Hall of Famer will be the first to be honored with a statue at Dodger Stadium.

A bronze statue of Jackie Robinson stealing home was unveiled at Dodger Stadium on Saturday, an idea stemming from a meeting shortly after the team's new ownership took control in 2012.

Robinson's widow, Rachel Robinson, also attended as did his children Sharon and David along with team president Stan Kasten and Johnson.

"She's really led the charge on the legacy building", Sharon Robinson said. Robinson went 0-for-3 in his debut, won 5-3 by the Dodgers.

"It means to me that we talk about it every year [on] this day", Baker said, "but to me, no big deal, because every day is Jackie Robinson Day to me". In fact, Robinson stole home to help the Dodgers secure the win in the first game of the 1955 World Series. Roberts is the first African American manager in Dodgers history.

Sharon Robinson believes the statue of Jackie will also serve a objective to the community, providing inspiration to others who may want to follow in his footsteps. "The statue is a tribute to not only the rich history and success Robinson brought to the Dodgers organization, but the social impact he made on this country".

"To see that cycle in one's life, and to see that work honored and respected, and to see the elders there who were with her during those days, I think it touches great memories for her and has great significance and importance".

Robinson, raised in California, got a taste of the Canadian winter as the Royals capped off the year by beating the American Association's Louisville Colonels for the Junior World Series championship. Historically, that's what was most important.

Jackie Robinson grew up in Pasadena, and he met his wife at UCLA in 1941.

My father and I watched many baseball games together, including those first games that Strawberry played for the New York Mets during his rookie season in 1983. Campanis also tutored Robinson on how to protect himself when opposing players tried to spike him, which happened more often because he was black.
