Canadian Defence Minister begins week-long visit to India

Canadian Defence Minister begins week-long visit to India

The Congress leaders further said that having been badly scarred by militancy in the past, Punjab could not afford to ignore such blatant signs of efforts to revive the Khalistani forces, which were simply waiting to draw out their fangs at the slightest opportunity.

The Punjab Congress on Monday castigated elements standing up in support of Canadian defence minister Harjit Singh Sajjan, saying there were enough documentary and circumstantial evidence on record to prove the Indo-Canadian's Khalistani sympathies.

Speaking to the private news channel NDTV on Wednesday, Capt. Amarinder Singh had said he would depute a minister to receive Mr. Sajjan when the latter Punjab as he and other members of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's cabinet of Sikh origin were "Khalistani sympathisers".

Opposition Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal on Thursday asked Amarinder Singh "not to act petty and spiteful and give the minister of a sovereign country the respect he deserves". Punjabis worldwide are proud of their elected representatives in Canada and Sajjan is an example of personal accomplishment for the entire Punjabi diaspora.

"I am not bothered about what Sajjan or others in the Canadian government think about my stand".

The chief minister was not answerable to the Akalis, but was only accountable to the people of Punjab, who had given him a "resounding mandate" in the recent Assembly polls, said Gurjit. "In fact, he has gone out of the way to improve the relations between India and the United States", said Sukhbir.

Sources in the Canadian high commission said he would Chandigarh on April 21 where he would inaugurate the new office of the consulate-general of Canada.

India and Canada will explore ways to deepen bilateral defence and security cooperation during Canadian Defence Minister Harjit Singh Sajjans seven- day visit here, beginning today.

Sajjan's brazenly pro-Khalistani stance had also not gone down well with the Indian government when the Liberal candidate, at a Surrey temple Remembrance Day event in 2011, had warned his colleagues not to allow themselves to be photographed near posters of Khalistani martyrs.
