'Fate of the Furious' races to biggest global box office opening ever

'Fate of the Furious' races to biggest global box office opening ever

Tyrese Gibson, Nathalie Emmanuell, Vin Diesel and Ludacris attend "The Fate Of The Furious" New York premiere at Radio City Music Hall, April 8, 2017.

"The Fate of the Furious" raked in $100.2 million inside the USA and $432.3 million aboard ― the latter is the most any film has ever made in its global debut weekend.

Star Wars, Harry Potter or indeed the nearly century-old comic book legends Batman and Superman may have sprung from a rich creative well, but in a stunning twist all of them have been banished to the box office naughty step. Heading into the weekend, most analysts expected the film would roar past the $100 million mark, instead of inch over the line.

The Fate of the Furious, the eighth and latest installment in the The Fast and the Furious franchise, sped past a global box office record this weekend.

Directed by Straight Outta Compton's F. Gary Gray, the movie stars Dwyane "The Rock" Johnson, Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Charlize Theron, Michelle Rodriguez, Helen Mirren, and Kurt Russell. Gifted, $3 million 7.

Star Wars took in $529 million total on its opening weekend and, well, Furious 8 looks like it just surpassed that. The eighth "Fast and Furious" opened to $432.3 million internationally, destroying the foreign opening record of $316.7 million set by Universal's "Jurassic World" in 2015.

Final numbers have yet to be released, but based on earlier estimates, the action-thriller is poised to set a new worldwide high-water mark. IndieWire's David Ehrlich labeled the film the worst of the series, while the Los Angeles Times' Justin Chang argued the franchise had jumped the shark, or in this case, the nuclear submarine. "The Boss Baby" took second with $15.5 million, while "Beauty and the Beast" held on to third place with $13.6 million. Despite the rising costs, the film remains on pace to top $1 billion worldwide, making more sequels a certainty.

Rounding out the top five was "Smurfs: The Lost Village", earning an estimated $6.5 million, and "Going in Style", with $6.35 million.

Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" landed in third place with an estimated 13.6 million US dollars.
