Google Settles Russian Android Antitrust Case For $7.8 Million

Google Settles Russian Android Antitrust Case For $7.8 Million

The search engine giant Google today was fined $7.8 million (438 million roubles), and agreed to to stop preventing phone manufacturers from changing the default search engine on Android phones sold in Russian Federation.

The FAS in September 2015 considered Google in breach of a competition law after the complaint by Yandex of the competitive advantage for Google on Android phones.

Google has agreed to be less controlling about what Android phone manufacturers can do in Russian Federation, as the result of a settlement today with the country's antimonopoly agency.

The settlement included Google agreeing that it remove any restrictions in agreements with manufacturers in the country and must let third party applications, including search engines, appear. It should enable Yandex to reach commercial agreements with mobile-phone makers and expand its share of search on Android devices in Russian Federation, he said.

Alphabet Inc.'s Google settled its dispute with Russia's antitrust watchdog in an agreement that opens the way for local search engine Yandex NV to be pre-installed on Android devices. Google had been appealing that decision until this week's settlement was reached. Yandex now holds a 55 percent share of the search market in Russian Federation, while Google clings to a 40 percent share. In a "few months", Google will have a home-screen search widget that will offer up any manner of search providers (yep, including Yandex) assuming they sign a commercial agreement for their inclusion in the query box.

Google will now likely lose considerable market share in search to Yandex, with filed the original suit. This will allow end users of the devices based on the Android OS with the GMS package to see the new "choice screen" at the first launch of the new Chrome widget. While Chrome allows users to easily change the search engine, there is no way at the system-level to have easy access to another engine.

"Implementation of the settlement's terms will be an effective means to secure competition between developers of mobile applications". Additionally, we have developed market-leading on-demand transportation services, navigation products, and other mobile applications for millions of consumers across the globe.
